Note: Prior to February, 2020, reCAPTCHA was on by default for all forms. To disable reCAPTCHA, you must have access to the reCAPTCHA settings. This requires that you create a Formspree account if you haven't already.

We introduced Google [reCAPTCHA](https://www.google.com/recaptcha/intro/) to prevent your form from being used as a mechanism to deliver spam. reCAPTCHA utilizes machine learning to distinguish between humans and automated "bots" with just a single click. This is an improvement over previous spam prevention tools that often required visitors to decipher distorted images.

The Google reCAPTCHA in action:

You can also [use your own reCAPTCHA key](/articles/form-and-project-settings/adding-a-custom-recaptcha-v2-key/) on your website to avoid redirecting to Formspree.

Some users don't receive enough spam to warrant this measure, and prefer not to require the extra step in their form workflow. For this reason, Formspree users have the option to disable reCAPTCHA on a per form basis. To disable reCAPTCHA on your Formspree form, go to the **Settings** of your form and toggle under the "Spam protection" section:
